Early Childhood Education is one of the most rewarding careers available to those who are passionate about nurturing and shaping tomorrow’s generation. You will learn about early childhood education in New Zealand, and discover the history and philosophy of different styles of early childhood services. We have a holistic focus on the learning and development of children.

This qualification enables students to gain employment in the Early Childcare sector as well as providing them with a base qualification for entry onto higher level 5 courses.

Study topics

Students are required to complete a minimum of 110 credits, sixty eight (68) compulsory credits and a minimum of forty two (42) elective credits.

  • Early Childhood Curriculum in NZ (Te Whariki)
  • Early Childhood Education and Care (PIECE)
  • Communication with children
  • Child development, observation, skills in play
  • Play resources
  • Health & Safety in Early Childhood Education
  • Guidance Techniques
  • Professional practice and ethics
  • First Aid, off-site practicum
  • Food technology and nutrition
  • Early Childhood Family, Community, and Society

Study Method

The programme is run over 44 weeks. This is made up of a 24 week first semester, which includes a three week work experience block (practicum) in an early childhood setting, followed by a three week study break. This is followed by a second 20 week semester, which includes a further three week practicum followed by another two week study break.

Cross-credit

You can apply for a cross-credit if you have completed this qualification and want to study higher Level 5 courses in Early Childhood Education. Cross credits are assessed on an individual basis. You will need to supply us with the prescription of the papers you would like us to consider for a cross credit.

Pathway to a University Degree

As mentioned previously this qualification enables students to gain employment in the Early Childcare sector as well as providing them with a base qualification for entry onto higher level 5 ECE courses.

But applicants can join the course at any time during the year if there is a vacancy or if a vacancy becomes available.

Fee:
NZ$ 9,500 per academic year (International Students)

NZ$ 3,400 per academic year (Local Students)

Entry Requirements:

  • At least 18 years of age;
  • Completion of at least 3 years of secondary school;
  • While there is no IELTS test score required students will be required to satisfy the interviewer that they are able to successfully complete the course.

This program is valued as a one year qualification by Immigration New Zealand (INZ). You can therefore apply to INZ for a one-year study Visa. Learn more >
